Stop distance, ticks, and account risk (crypto)

Link stop distance to dollar risk with a repeatable checklist before you enter a volatile USD pair.

A stop encodes invalidation: “If price trades here, my thesis is wrong enough to exit.” Crypto can gap on listings, exploits, or thin books—plan size so survival does not depend on perfect fills.

Translate ticks to dollars

Once you know tick value at a candidate size, multiply by stop distance in ticks to see potential loss if the stop fills near the model price.

Volatility-aware stops

Stops placed too tight can be noise exits; too wide can break risk limits. Many traders combine structure (swing invalidation) with a hard account cap.

Use position size and tick value together for a pre-trade check.

Stops as hypotheses, not promises

A stop encodes invalidation: “If price trades here, my thesis is wrong enough to exit.” Crypto can gap on exploits, delistings, or thin books—plan size so survival does not depend on perfect fills.

Pre-trade checklist

  • Stop distance in ticks for this exact symbol
  • Tick value at final planned size
  • Implied loss versus risk cap
  • Event or funding risk in the next few hours

After the fact review

If stops are touched repeatedly at the minimum allowed distance, question whether the stop is structural or noise. Tightening without evidence usually raises churn, not edge.
